The previous session was all about Karuhat’s relaxed but flexing, relentless style, and in this session I try to get “on beat”, by which I mean getting into that rhythm where seemingly every step results in a strike or a check on my behalf, and every step down on his behalf results in the same for me. It’s like a continuous conversation of movements in and out, side to side, always conscious of the open side, always guiding toward the power side or to the corners. There’s a lot in this session because being “off beat” in a way shows the contours of the beat. I also call this the trampoline quality of his style, in the sense that each step down has a kind of momentum or propulsion, a flex.
